Sometimes when I think of when I was at khe Sanh all the things that happened.
Each day was a true day of survival. It was like watching war movies and living in it at the same time. Movies at home you sit and watch at Khe Sahn it was another story the smell of death in a way. seeing pieces of flesh and know that it came from some one you knew at that time and it could of been yours. And the taken away of the dead and wounded in stretchers.
The rats jumping from one person to another as we look out a cross the outside of the perimeter waiting and waiting through the night for them to come. Our uniforms were green and each day the oil from our necks would get into the cloth until the collar was dark and shiny from out body oil. The rats did not bother us after awhile we were to tired to care.In the morning we would get up and leave our tranches and walk around to see who survived the nights artillery . We would take the 50 caliber machine gun from the machine gun bunker to our position so that the NVA looking during the day would think that it was there all the time and if they rushed us, go for our position because a machine gun position is something you want to knock out fast. At night it went back to its original position. We had no overhead protection in the trenches . The only people who had protection was the machine gun positions and command bunkers. The early mornings the air would be filled with fog and dampness. and the smell of gun powder.
During the night it would be a war movie setting . Our choppers firing there rockets into there positions, Plans coming in dropping napalm, our artillery firing into their positions, the ground shaking from B 52 dropping there load of bombs . The Battle Ship New Jersey laying in 16 inch artillery . Our planes being shot down by the NVA .Our base being shelled. All was happening in front of us each night .
Maybe the dead were the lucky ones they were already dead and not knowing when it would be you only a matter of time .
Ah memories each day would bring another .
